Reading Learning Story

In reading I have been  learning how to use my prior knowledge about what I already know about N.Zs involvement in War around the world such as WW1 and the Vietnam war. For example, America asked if N.Z can send some of their troops to help them fight against North Vietnam.  If we didn't then we could turn into a communist country. N.Z got scared so they helped America and South Vietnam to fight against North Vietnam. 

Researching for information helps me to understand different kinds of text. One of the journals that I read was about a young man called Silas. He didn't believe in fighting in WW1 because the bible says "thy shalt not kill". In the end he still had to go because his name was pulled out of the ballot. If he didn't go to war they would take him to jail. He went to war and became a stretcher bearer.

When I was reading Silas the Stretcher Bearer, I had to use my prior knowledge of what I already knew about World War 1 and conscription to help me make connections and understand the authors information.

I have also been learning how to research interesting information by using my skimming and scanning strategy to find answers to my wondering war questions quickly. When we had to research for information about WW1 I was able to skim, and scan books from the library and the internet to find the correct answer.

When I was researching about the Vietnam war I found out a lot of information I didn't know. I now know how many people died, what N.Zs involvement is in the Vietnam War, how many people were wounded and so on. When Room 3 worked on War problems in maths I could use what I learnt in reading to help me visualize the problem. 

I strongly believe that N.Z shouldn't attend to war anymore because we've already been to a lot of wars and a lot of men have already died. Also a lot of families have been affected and never forgave themselves for what happened to there beloved ed sons. Also a lot of men never got to experience being a dad or whatever they wanted to be. 

Why would you want to go to war if that country did nothing to you? And were being forced to go out there and fight when its the person who started the conflicts problem. I agree that every living citizen over the age of 18 should have a choice weather to fight or not.

Its not fair  because they sacrificed their precious lives for us and they put their life on the line for us.  I have a lot of questions that I need answers so I will keep reading and researching to understand more about the war and why NZ went to war.
